Ryan Whitney claps back at Bruins GM Don Sweeney for calling him a 'liar'
The contract negotiations between the Boston Bruins and goaltender Jeremy Swayman have taken another turn.
Last week, Bruins GM Don Sweeney called out Spittin' Chiclets host Ryan Whitney for claiming that Sweeney had not responded to Swayman's calls for three weeks amidst strained talks.
"I think it's bullshit that somebody says I wouldn't return a call for three weeks.... But at the end of the day, it's inaccurate," Sweeney told the media.
In response, Whitney fired back on the Spittin' Chicklets podcast, standing by his original claim.
"Now, I think Don Sweeney's taking out his frustration on really fumble on f**king this entire negotiation on me a little bit and indirectly on you because he didn't want to say my name... I just don't understand not talking that long to a camp." Whitney said.
"I stand by what I was told, right? Like he's gonna call me a liar. I think he's fudging little bit the truth," he added.
He criticized how the Bruins handled the negotiations from the start, trading Linus Ullmark before securing a deal with Swayman and declining to take Swayman to arbitration. Whitney believes this gave all the leverage to Swayman's camp.
Based on what he heard, Whitney doesn't think Swayman will relent easily. He speculated that Swayman's agent, who also represents William Nylander, could advise his client to hold out until December like Nylander did.
In Ryan Whitney's opinion, the Bruins need to offer 8 years at $8-8.2 million to get a deal done.
Paul Bissonnette came to Ryan Whitney's defense after Don Sweeney called him out
Paul Bissonnette leaped to the defense of his podcast co-host Ryan Whitney after Boston Bruins GM Don Sweeney called out Whitney for spreading misinformation.
"I love Don. I love Don’s son. I love lamp. Although Don is reporting fake news about fake news, apparently. I did not report 1 thing about the Swayman signing. It was Squanto’s father who reported it. I stand by my partner.” Bissonnette said on X.
Swayman had an impressive last season for the Bruins in 2023-24, posting a 2.34 GAA and .919 save percentage. With training camp underway, there is urgency for both sides to resolve Swayman’s contract.
