Senators' Claude Giroux addresses recent rumors surrounding his NHL retirement
Claude Giroux is still one of the NHL’s most reliable forwards despite being 36 years old now. This season, he has posted five goals and 11 points in 12 games, helping the Ottawa Senators to a 6-6-0 record. However, with this season being the final year of his three-year contract, rumors about his future and possible retirement are spreading.
In a recent interview with The Athletic, Giroux addressed the rumors. When asked about retirement, he made it clear he’s focused on playing for now.
"I want to play hockey," Giroux said on Thursday. "I love coming to the rink and playing every night. After I’m done, I haven’t really thought about it. I think it’s something I’ll worry about when I’m older."
Claude Giroux wants to keep playing and pushing for a Stanley Cup. Despite not winning a championship yet, he has remained a valuable player. He joined Ottawa in 2022 after a brief stint with the Florida Panthers and 15 seasons with the Philadelphia Flyers. His presence has brought experience and leadership to a young Senators team with captain Brady Tkachuk working to stay competitive.
This season, Giroux ranks 63rd in the league in points. In games where Ottawa struggled, he still contributed, scoring three goals and two assists. In games they won, he added two goals and four assists.
Claude Giroux signed a three-year $19.5 million contract in 2022. Based on his current pace, Giroux is on track to finish with 34 goals and 75 points, per ESPN. For his career, Giroux has proven himself as a top player. With 1,194 games, 355 goals and 1,077 points, he’s built an impressive résumé.
Claude Giroux and the Senators lacked offense in 5-1 loss to Sabres
The Ottawa Senators lost 5-1 to the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday at KeyBank Center. JJ Peterka led Buffalo with two goals and an assist, helping his team end its three-game losing streak. Ottawa's only goal was from a rebound by Ridly Greig.
Claude Giroux had two shots on goal in 16 minutes of ice time but didn’t score. The Senators entered the third period down 2-1 but allowed two quick goals, which put the game out of reach.
After the game, Senators coach Travis Green said Buffalo deserved the win.
"They played better than us, special teams," Green said. "We lost a special team battle.”
Ottawa’s road record is now 1-5-0, and they continue to look for ways to improve away from home.
