"Senators and Sabres are like Spiderman pointing meme" - Elliotte Friedman laments unfulfilled potential of Buffalo and Ottawa with hilarious analogy
NHL analyst Elliotte Friedman, on November 9th, commented on the struggles of the Buffalo Sabres and Ottawa Senators. In his "32 Thoughts" column, he compared these teams to the "Spider-Man pointing" meme, suggesting they are very similar; full of potential but unable to find consistency.
Friedman wrote about Buffalo GM's plans:
"Buffalo GM Kevyn Adams aggressively worked the phones, but made it clear he wouldn’t subtract or ruin chances for a playoff spot.
"The Senators and Sabres are like the Spiderman pointing meme. So much talent, so much potential. We’re begging for them to do it more often."
Buffalo holds a 7-7-1 record, putting them 3rd in the Atlantic Division. Ottawa, with a 6-7-0 record, is 7th in the same division. Both teams have shown flashes of skill but struggle for consistency. Buffalo earned key wins over strong teams like the Rangers and Senators, while Ottawa has had standout games, including an 8-1 victory over the Blues.
Offensively, both teams score over three goals per game. Buffalo averages 3.36 goals, while Ottawa slightly edges them with 3.46. However, defense remains an issue. Buffalo allows an average of 3.14 goals, and Ottawa is close at 3.23.
Tage Thompson leads Buffalo with nine goals and 16 points, while Alex Tuch has eight assists. Ottawa has also shown offensive depth, especially in high-scoring games like their 8-7 win over the Kings. Tim Stutzle leads the sens with 19 points.
The Buffalo Sabres won over the Ottawa Senators earlier this week
The Buffalo Sabres defeated the Ottawa Senators 5-1 on Tuesday at KeyBank Center, snapping their three-game losing streak. JJ Peterka led the way with two goals and an assist, while Bowen Byram and Tage Thompson added a goal each for Buffalo.
Peterka scored first on the power play, putting the Buffalo up 1-0. Jason Zucker passed the puck to Peterka, who was positioned near the net. Peterka angled it off goalie Linus Ullmark’s shoulder to score.
Early in the second period, Bowen Byram made it 2-0. He took a quick one-timer from the right circle and beat Ullmark on the short side. Ridly Greig then scored for Ottawa to cut the lead to 2-1. He followed up his rebound, putting the puck through Sabres goalie Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen’s legs.
Buffalo pulled away in the third period. Byram scored again just 21 seconds in, shooting from the blue line and slipping it past Ullmark. Sixteen seconds later, Thompson scored to make it 4-1. Alex Tuch’s shot deflected off Thompson’s shoulder as he lay in the crease. Ottawa challenged for goaltender interference, but the goal was upheld after review.
Peterka scored his second goal of the night later in the third, one-timing a pass from Thompson. This final goal put Buffalo up 5-1.
