Sidney Crosby contract breakdown: Salary, bonus, and other key numbers surrounding extension
After some talk over the offseason, Sidney Crosby finally signed an extension with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He is with the team for the next two years. As he continues to inch closer to retirement, the Penguins would like him to remain a lifer.
Per Elliotte Friedman, the two-year deal is worth almost $1.9 million in salary. He does have two substantial bonuses for the deal, but the salary and AAV are fairly low.
The Pens are paying him $780,000 in the first year of his new deal with a $9 million bonus. He will earn almost $1.1 million in the second year and have a $6.53 million bonus.
So he will earn about $17.4 million from the team he has played his entire career for. He may not have many years left in the NHL, but he and the team seem intent on making sure they're not spent apart.
Penguins GM discusses Sidney Crosby's extension
While he's still an impactful player, Sidney Crosby has passed his prime. Despite that, he's still one of the most important players the Pittsburgh Penguins have. They decided to ensure they had him for longer with the long-awaited extension.
President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Kyle Dubas said via NHL:
“There are no words to properly describe what Sidney Crosby means to the game of hockey, the city of Pittsburgh and the Penguins organization."
He added that Crosby was:
"The greatest player of his generation and one of the greatest players in the history of the game.
"His actions today show why he is one of hockey’s greatest winners and leaders. Sid is making a tremendous personal sacrifice in an effort to help the Penguins win, both now and in the future, as he has done for his entire career,” the GM said.
The three-time Stanley Cup Champion will enter his 20th season with the team, a franchise record, and will be hoping to finish his career with some more silverware.
