Sidney Crosby seemingly refuels his car for exactly $87.87 at Nova Scotia gas station
Sydney Crosby has dominated the ice for years, wearing the now-iconic No. 87. The Pittsburgh Penguins center seemingly left a witty memento with his jersey number at a gas station in Wallace, Nova Scotia.
On Wednesday, the Instagram account of BarDown Sports posted a photo of a gas station receipt that quickly caught the attention of fans. The receipt, dated August 4, 2024, showed a total of exactly $87.87 spent at the pump.
The Instagram post mentioned that Crosby had stopped by an Ultramar gas station in Wallace, NS. A cashier named Sheena Bennett served him, but she didn’t recognize him at the time.
"It’s no secret that Sidney Crosby spends some of his off-season time in his home province of NS! It seems he’s also spending some of that time in Wallace/Fox Harbr. The lucky Sheena Bennett served him at the store this morning when he filled up at the pumps. She didn’t get a picture (she had no idea it was him…..hehe……until another customer filled her in) but he still left a little something behind so we’d know it was him! 🏒🚗🏆", the note read.
Only later did she realize who he was, thanks to another customer. Despite not getting a picture with Sidney Crosby, the receipt he left behind had a small, but fun clue—he spent exactly $87.87, a subtle nod to his jersey number.
This subtle nod seems to have been his way of leaving a little "signature" behind. One fan even pointed out the additional coincidence of Crosby using regular gas, which is often referred to as "87-octane."
Sidney Crosby to continue wearing his now-iconic No. 87: report
The Penguins great has reigned over the hearts of hockey fans for almost two decades. As Crosby will be entering the final year of his current contract with Pittsburgh, his future with the team and in the league remains uncertain beyond the 2024-25 season.
Sid turned 37-years-old on Wednesday and has remained quiet over the possibilities of any possible contract extension. However, according to The Athletic’s Rob Rossi, Crosby will continue wearing No. 87 beyond next season.
“The Pittsburgh Penguins and captain Sidney Crosby are closing in on a new contract, multiple team and league sources briefed on negotiations told The Athletic. The team and player are confident a deal will be agreed upon and formalized soon, the sources said,” Rossi reported earlier last month.
“The potential deal is being viewed by both sides as ‘a commitment to Pittsburgh,’ a team and league source said,” he wrote.
If the reports are correct, the beloved Penguins legend will finish his career in Pittsburgh and conveyed those wishes to general manager Kyle Dubas this off-season. That being said, Crosby’s retirement should not come in 2024-25, much to Penguins fans’ relief.
