"So goddamn dynamic & special": Ryan Whitney bets on Canadiens' Lane Hutson as Calder Trophy favorite

On Sunday's episode of "Spittin' Chiclets," Ryan Whitney made a bold bet on Lane Hutson of the Montreal Canadiens for the Calder Trophy. Whitney expressed high hopes for Hutson and said:

"Lane Hutson is so goddamn dynamic and special. I think he’s going to turn heads this season. I think it’s a nice little bet for the Calder trophy."

Whitney believes Hutson could reach over 50 points this season.

"I think he gets 50 points because I watched some of this game. It was like he was playing against middle schoolers. He is dominant."

He also compared the excitement around Hutson to the buzz that P.K. Subban created during his career. Whitney thinks Hutson's creativity and skill with the puck will thrill fans.

Paul Bissonnette added that Hutson reminds him of a mix between Quinn Hughes and Adam Fox. He noted Hutson’s talent in making plays. The hosts agreed that Hutson could excel on the power play, especially since he did well in college. This raises hopes for his impact on the Canadiens’ offense.

However, it’s important to set realistic expectations. While Hutson has impressed in training camp, starting the season in Montreal isn’t certain. Whitney's prediction of 50 points is ambitious. Last year, Mike Matheson scored 60 points, but he had significant power play time.

For Hutson, aiming for 35 to 40 points might be more realistic. Matheson’s role on the first power play could limit Hutson's chances, despite his talent. Hutson's potential has fans wondering if he can have a good rookie season as training camp goes on. Ryan Whitney's bet has created interest in this young player’s future.

Lane Hutson impresses P.K. Subban at Canadiens training camp

Lane Hutson impressed P.K. Subban during a Canadiens training camp scrimmage. Subban shared his thoughts on social media, praising Hutson's skill. He noted Hutson's ability to evade defenders and make a perfect saucer pass.

"Evades pressure, 20 foot SAUCER Breakout pass tape to tape, all in motion with HEAD UP.... Not sure you can teach that. MMMMMMMHM! Let’em Cook!" Subban wrote on X (formerly twitter).

At only 20 years old, Hutson was drafted 62nd overall in 2022. Last season, he played two NHL games and had two assists. His time at Boston University was notable, with 15 goals and 34 assists in 38 games.
