"Start of Dallas downfall": NHL fans react to Dallas Stars' rumored interest in trading Jason Robertson

ARJUN B

The Dallas Stars’ rumored willingness to trade star winger Jason Robertson has sparked major buzz across the NHL fanbase.

According to insider Elliotte Friedman, the potential move is linked to the team’s push to re-sign Mikael Granlund. With limited salary cap flexibility — particularly if they’re unable to move contracts like Mathew Dumba or Ilya Lyubushkin — the Stars could be forced into making a difficult call.

“Jason Robertson's name is out there; could be moved to make room for a Granlund extension if (Mathew) Dumba or (Ilya) Lyubushkin can't be shipped out,” Friedman said on Sportsnet 590 The Fan.

Here's how fans reacted to the news on X/Twitter:

“Moving him to keep a guy in his 30s would be the start of Dallas' downfall,” one fan said.
"Lets trade our 25 year old elite top line winger, so we have cap space to sign a 33 year old 2nd liner…Bold strategy…," another fan wrote.

Here are more reactions from fans on X:

"Do people not understand that Robertson would be moved for more than JUST re-signing Granlund? It would obviously be cap space for Granlund, Benn and possibly another player or 2," one fan added.
"What a f**king disaster it would be if we had to move Robertson because Jim Neil gave Matt dumba a 2 year contract," another fan wrote.
"Uh huh. That seems completely backwards lmao" a fan commented.
"Robertson ain't going nowhere. 1 yr left and WHY keep older players like Granlund, Seguin and other 30+ players ??" one fan said.

Robertson has 35 goals and 80 points in the regular season, and his production has carried over to the postseason, where he has six points in 11 games.

New York Rangers showing interest in Jason Robertson

The New York Rangers are reportedly interested in acquiring Jason Robertson, according to USA Today's Vince Mercogliano. Robertson is in the final season of his four-year, $31 million contract and is set to become a restricted free agent in 2026 summer.

“Teams are buzzing around the 25-year-old All-Star, wondering if they can seize on Dallas’ itch for change following its third straight loss in the Western Conference Final… The Rangers, I’m told, are one of them.” Mercogliano said.

Whether Dallas will make him available remains to be seen, but the Stars will seemingly have several suitors if they do decide to shop.
