"Take my talents elsewhere": Mike Commodore opines Mitch Marner should take the LeBron James-way out of Toronto
Former NHLer and Stanley Cup winner Mike Commodore shared his perspective on Mitch Marner's situation with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
He opined that Marner should think about making a move like LeBron James, looking for new chances outside of Toronto. After the Maple Leafs' defeat to the Boston Bruins in the first round of this year's playoffs, Marner has become the center of rumors.
Reports suggest the 27-year-old might leave as a free agent. Despite all the talk and guesswork, nothing has happened so far. Commodore pointed out that Mitch Marner could look into options that could help both him and the team, like freeing up cap space and getting valuable assets.
On "Bodog's Clearing the Crease Podcast," Commodore said:
"From the outside looking in, I think if I was Mitch Marner, I think if I'm the Leafs, like, Hey, look, you're gonna have this guy, you know, not even. He's gonna want to raise, like, we're probably gonna pay another forward like that a bunch of money, or do we try and I know he has a no-move clause and everything like, let's get him out and see if we can get some pieces."
"But, you know, these guys—if I was Mitch Marner—I think I've seen enough; maybe it's time for me to get into it. Maybe it's time for me to get out of Toronto. I've had a nice run here, and things haven't worked out. We didn't win, but, you know, I am a good player. Maybe I'll you know. It's so, LeBron. I don't like LeBron but "take my talents elsewhere," Commodore added.
Marner is heading into the final year of a deal signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2019. This contract runs for six years and is worth $65.4 million. He will become a UFA at the end of the 2024-25 season. It's worth mentioning that his final year includes a no-movement clause in the contract.
