"Thank you for spoiling our kids": Johnny Gaudreau's wife Meredith pens heartwarming message for Flames fans after emotional return to Calgary
Johnny Gaudreau was a fan-favorite player in Calgary. He was traded from the Calgary Flames to Columbus in 2022 but the Flames fans still loved and supported him. Johnny and his brother Matthew died in August in a car-bike crash. On December 3, the Flames gave a special tribute to him before their game against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
In an Instagram post shared on Monday night, Johnny Gaudreau’s wife, Meredith Gaudreau, shared her gratitude. She thanked the Calgary Flames organization for the warm welcome and highlighted the love her family felt.
“Thank you from the bottom of my heart to the entire Calgary Flames Organization for the warmest welcome back to celebrate John,” Meredith wrote.
She described Calgary as their “first home together” and a place filled with favorite memories. Meredith also thanked the Flames community, players, and her "hockey sisters" for their support. Writing about the family's special week, she said:
"I love you Calgary so very much. Thank you for spoiling our kids and for a really special week. I know John was so flattered by your love, thankful for taking care of us and so so proud of you all."
The pre-game ceremony honored Johnny Gaudreau’s legacy and the impact he had on Calgary and the hockey community. Both teams lined up at their blue lines for the pre-game ceremony. A video tribute played, set to “Johnny B. Goode,” a nod to Johnny’s nickname.
Johnny’s family, including his wife, children, parents, and siblings, stepped onto center ice for the ceremonial puck drop. Sean Monahan, Johnny’s close friend, represented the Blue Jackets, while Flames captain Mikael Backlund stood opposite him for the puck drop. They were acknowledged with a standing ovation from the 17,386-strong crowd.

"Thank you to the Calgary Flames Organization, the players, their families and the fans of Calgary for everything you have done for our family," Jane wrote in her Instagram post. "Being back in Calgary and reconnecting with friends and our favorite places was truly special."
Jane Gaudreau shared pictures of the family participating in the ceremonial puck drop and spending time together in Calgary. Jane expressed gratitude for the tribute and said:
"I know the boys were looking down, smiling, and loving it as much as we all did. We look forward to seeing you all again. ❤️"
