"That’s not my style" - When Evgeny Kuznetsov expressed his disinterest in pursuing NHL MVP title
Carolina Hurricanes forward Evgeny Kuznetsov is on unconditional waivers, and his contract has been terminated on Thursday. Kuznetsov, who is currently a free agent, once said he wasn't interested in being NHL MVP.
Drafted 26th overall by the Washington Capitals in 2010, Kuznetsov became crucial during their 2018 Stanley Cup win, leading in scoring and nearly earning the Conn Smythe Trophy. Despite this, he faced trade rumors and scrutiny for inconsistent play and even off-ice issues.
In October 2018, Kuznetsov acknowledged his approach to the game.
"To be MVP, you have to work hard 365 (days) in a year, but I’m not ready for that," Kuznetsov said (sportsnet.ca).
Kuznetsov said he preferred enjoying the game and taking risks over chasing top individual honors in the league.
"I want to have fun, and I want to make those risky plays when sometimes you don’t have to play and you guys don’t understand every time those plays. It’s not easy to make," Kuznetsov added.
"But to be MVP in this league, you have to play even better. You have to go next level. It’s not easy. More importantly, you have to stay focused 365 (days), but that’s not my style."
Kuznetsov's time in the NHL was troubled by controversy.
In September 2019, he was suspended for three games due to "inappropriate conduct" and later received a four-year ban from international play after testing positive for cocaine.
Evgeny Kuznetsov's ups and downs journey continued when he entered the NHL/NHLPA player assistance program in February for undisclosed reasons. Despite efforts to bounce back, like playing with the Hershey Bears in the AHL, his trade to Carolina for a future draft pick marked the end of his North American career.
Kuznetsov is reportedly planning to play for SKA Saint Petersburg in the KHL.
Evgeny Kuznetsov placed on waivers for contract termination by Carolina Hurricanes
Evgeny Kuznetsov played 20 regular-season games and scored two goals and five assists. In the playoffs, he contributed four goals and two assists in 10 games.
Kuznetsov's contract termination with the Hurricanes was a mutual decision between him and the team.
"Ultimately both sides agreed this was the best course of action for both the player and the team," General Manager Eric Tulsky said (via NHL.com). "We thank Evgeny for his time with the team and wish him and his family the best."
Evgeny Kuznetsov still had a year to go on his deal, which paid him $3.9 million per season, with some salary kept back.
