Calvin Pickard starts for Oilers in Game 5 against Canucks
In Game 5 against Vancouver tonight, Calvin Pickard will be taking the helm for the Edmonton Oilers, a decision affirmed by NHL analyst Mark Spector's post confirming his starting position.
Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch commended Pickard's NHL playoff debut in Game 4 on Tuesday and said:
"(Pickard) looked like a guy who had played 100 playoff games."
Pickard's composed performance led to a 3-2 win for Edmonton, marking his first career postseason start. His promotion came after starter Stuart Skinner struggled, conceding four goals on 15 shots in Game 3. Skinner's playoff stats reflected a .793 save percentage with 12 goals against and just one win.
Pickard, who signed in July 2022, spent most of the season with the AHL's Bakersfield Condors before assuming the backup role in November. In the regular season, Pickard boasted a 12-7-1 record with a 2.45 GAA and .909 save percentage, while Skinner held a 36-16-5 record with a 2.62 GAA and .905 save percentage.
