Top NHL insider allays fear over Jeremy Swayman's contract standoff with Bruins
Boston Bruins netminder Jeremy Swayman won't be reporting to training camp for the season ahead until he and the franchise finalize a contract. According to reports this week, Boston GM Don Sweeney is confident that the two sides will reach an agreement.
In the meantime, the NHL community has been left to speculate about how the situation will resolve.
While Swayman is a restricted free agent, he has made it clear that he has no problem with sitting and waiting for a contract between now and the start of the 2024-25 season.
During a recent episode of his 32 Thoughts podcast, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman weighed in on the situation. He dismissed fears that the Bruins and Jeremy Swayman may not reach a deal before the start of the season.
"My impressions are that the Bruins do not want to trade Swayman ... I really do believe when they say that. When Sweeney came out the other day and said, 'We want to sign Swayman', I believe that. I believe that is their goal, and trading him is not what they are considering or want to do."
In the meantime, however, the team has signed Kasimir Kaskisuo to a PTO, giving them depth at the goalie position heading into their first preseason game on Sunday, Sept. 22.
"I'm optimistic" - Boston GM Don Sweeney shares update on Jeremy Swayman contract negotiations
NHL insider Elliotte Friedman isn't the only one who is optimistic that the Bruins and Jeremy Swayman will be able to finalize a contract sooner rather than later. Leading up to the start of the regular season, GM Don Sweeney spoke with reporters at Warrior Ice Arena this week.
As he explained, the franchise is fully focused, and committed, to finalizing a new contract for the veteran netminder. After the team parted ways with Linus Ullmark this summer, the need for a seasoned veteran with the ability to protect the net at a high level arose, as the Bruins seek to win a Stanley Cup.
That's where 2023 William M. Jennings Trophy winner Jeremy Swayman comes in. Since making the transition to the NHL, Swayman has continued to impress, most recently posting back-to-back seasons with an above 91% save percentage.
Because of that, Sweeney and the Bruins are fully committed to finalizing a contract that will see Swayman take the net sooner rather than later.
"It's our intention to continue to negotiate a contract. I'm disappointed that when you set things as a priority in the general manager spot that you do your best to try and accomplish that and I haven't been able to do that yet. At the end of the day, I'm optimistic because I think we'll find a landing spot before December 1st."
With preseason set to begin on Sept. 22, the Bruins will have several weeks to figure things out before the start of the regular season on Oct. 8, when they face the Florida Panthers.
With the team looking to make a big run this year in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, it will be interesting to see how the situation plays out in the weeks and months ahead.
