"Torn ACL, meniscus or MCL": Sports injury expert lays out possible Trevor Zegras injury scenarios
Sports injury expert Harjas Grewal has shared possible injury scenarios for Trevor Zegras after he left the Anaheim Ducks' game against the Vegas Golden Knights on Wednesday. Zegras was unable to put weight on his leg after falling awkwardly in the second period. His stick got tangled with William Karlsson’s during a faceoff, causing him to spin and fall.
Zegras immediately waved to the bench and needed help leaving the ice. The Ducks announced he would not return to the game.
Grewal explained several potential injuries: A torn ACL could keep Zegras out for over five months. A torn meniscus might take 4-to-6 weeks to heal if trimmed, or more than four months if repaired. He added that a torn MCL could vary, but it might result in week-to-week recovery.
"Mechanism is concerning for 1, 2 or even all 3 of the following torn ACL (5+ months out) torn meniscus (4-6 weeks if trimmed, 4+ months if repaired) torn MCL (depends on grade but often week-to-week). Hopefully a positive update on Zegras after MRI tomorrow," Grewal wrote in a post on X/Twitter.
Grewal expressed hope for a more positive update after Zegras undergoes an MRI to further assess the injury.
Trevor Zegras, known for his puck-handling skills and "Michigan" lacrosse-style goals, had been a key player for Anaheim, registering four goals and six assists in the 23 games he played this season.
The 23-year-old had previously been limited to 31 games last season due to injuries, including an ankle issue that required surgery. Zegras's injury on Wednesday has raised concerns, especially considering his past injury history.
Trevor Zegras and Anaheim Ducks lose 4-1 to Vegas Golden Knights
The Vegas Golden Knights secured a 4-1 victory over the Anaheim Ducks at Honda Center on Wednesday. Shea Theodore played a key role, scoring twice, while William Karlsson, Alexander Holtz and Jack Eichel contributed to the win. Ilya Samsonov made 19 saves in goal on the night.
Despite a strong performance from John Gibson, who recorded 29 saves for Anaheim, the Ducks struggled after Jackson LaCombe's goal narrowed the gap to 2-1.
The Golden Knights have now won six of their last eight games. The Vegas Golden Knights improved to 17-7-3, with a 7-4-3 record on the road. The Ducks are now 10-11-3 and 5-8-1 at home. Vegas scored one goal in the first period, another in the second and two more in the third, while Anaheim scored just once in the second period.
The Ducks host the Minnesota Wild next on Dec. 6, at 7:00 p.m. PST.
