Trevor van Riemsdyk injury: What happened to Washington Capitals defenseman?
Washington Capitals defenseman Trevor Van Riemsdyk was injured after taking a massive hit from New York Rangers forward Matt Rempe. After the collision, Van Riemsdyk went to the locker room and did not return to the ice.
Trevor Van Riemsdyk was going for the puck on the defensive end when it was rolling around the boards behind the Capitals goaltender. Matt Rempe came striding and gave Van Riemsdyk the hard check that sent him packing.
The collision was so devastating that Van Riemsdyk was injured instantly after the play. Matt Rempe was also initially assessed an interference penalty for his hard-hitting play on Van Riemsdyk.
In a statement from Washington Capitals PR, they said:
INJURY UPDATE: #Caps Trevor van Riemsdyk sustained an upper body injury and will not return
Before the body check on Van Riemsdyk by Rempe, the Washington Capitals scored the opening goal in the game's opening frame by John Carlson. However, New York answered with two straight goals to take the lead and scored another goal in the second period to take a 3-1 lead in the game with the third period still in hand.
New York is 1-3 on the powerplay in the game and the Capitals are 0-4 during that span. With game 3 taking place on April 26, the Capitals are on their heels.
Trevor Van Riemsdyk challenged the New York Rangers players on-ice
The New York Rangers players surrounded Van Riemsdyk after he remained on the ice during the beginning of the second intermission and tried to take on a few of the Rangers players.
When his teammates saw what was happening, they came rushing to his rescue and leveled the battlefield, where all mayhem would have let loose. Both teams, however, returned to their dressing rooms during the intermission and continued to play the game.
Gino Hard posted this clip of Van Riemsdyk challenging the New York Rangers:
"Caps players had to come back onto the ice because Trevor Van Riemsdyk was getting into it with the entire Rangers team"
Greg Wyshynski posted the following after the scrum:
"Trevor van Riemsdyk approached the Rangers as they were leaving the ice and got himself surrounded. A few Caps came back out after leaving the ice. We were real close to this thing exploding between then 2nd and 3rd periods."
The New York Rangers won the game by a score of 4-1, defeating the Washington Capitals.
