Watch: Corey Perry scores bizarre goal assisted by tray of nachos thrown by a fan

Edmonton Oilers forward Corey Perry scored an unusual goal against the Washington Capitals on Tuesday. With 15:10 left in the third period, a fan threw a tray of nachos onto the ice near Perry. From the left circle, Perry fired a one-timer past Logan Thompson, cutting Washington’s lead to 3-2.

NHL insider Ethan Cadeaux shared the moment on X, writing:

“Edmonton's Corey Perry just trimmed #AllCaps lead to 3-2 on a one-timer from the left circle, but he had a little help. The help? A plate of nachos on the ice. Yes, nachos.”

Here's the video of Perry's goal:

ESPN’s Greg Wyshynski added:

“Logan Thompson was yelling at the refs after Corey Perry’s goal because a fan had thrown a tray of nachos on the ice.”

Leon Draisaitl scored first for Edmonton at 3:02 in the opening period before Tom Wilson tied it for Washington at 9:01. In the second period, Matt Roy gave Washington a 2-1 lead with a slap shot, while Pierre-Luc Dubois made it 3-1 early in the third period.

Despite Edmonton dominating possession, Washington secured the win. The Oilers outshot the Capitals 32-14, but lost 3-2. Now Capitals lead their season series 1-0.

Corey Perry talked about Connor McDavid’s three-game suspension

Edmonton Oilers forward Corey Perry spoke about Connor McDavid’s three-game suspension. He criticized the NHL for not protecting its superstars.

McDavid was suspended for cross-checking Conor Garland against the Vancouver Canucks on Jan. 18. Perry said (as per Sportsnet.com):

"Why aren’t we protecting the superstars? Why aren't we? Every other league does it? They protect their superstars ... Sure, they're going to take extra abuse. They're the superstars. Connor knows that and he doesn't bi**h and complain very often about it."

The incident happened in the final seconds of the game. McDavid, pinned to the ice by Garland, delivered a high cross-check to Garland’s head in frustration. The NHL’s Department of Player Safety penalized McDavid for three games, with the player forfeiting $195,312.51.

McDavid has been key to the Oilers’ success this season, with 65 points in 43 games, including 20 goals and 45 assists. He has a +14 rating and scored 13 points in his last 10 games, with the Oilers winning eight.

The Oilers released a statement about McDavid's suspension:

"The Oilers organization is disappointed and we share in our fans' frustration over the three-game suspension of our captain Connor McDavid. We support him through this process and the organization and our fans look forward to having him back in the lineup vs. Seattle next week."

Perry defended McDavid, saying that players often need to protect themselves when referees don’t.
