Minnesota Wild prospect Zeev Buium has impressed at the USA World Junior Summer Showcase. B/R Open Ice shared a video of his performance on X (formerly Twitter).
In the video, Buium’s skillful play and smooth skating stood out. The showcase, running until August 3, helps players secure spots for the 2025 IIHF World Junior Championship in Ottawa.
At the 2024 IIHF World Junior Championship, Buium stood out for Team USA. He led all defensemen with three goals and a plus-11 rating. His play was key in the team’s gold medal win. The Minnesota Wild selected him 12th overall in the 2024 NHL Draft.
Why Zeev Buium chose to stay in college for another season
Zeev Buium, an 18-year-old defenseman, has decided to return to the University of Denver for another season. By rejoining a team that recently won the NCAA championship, Buium hopes to build on his strong freshman year and help the team aim for another title.
"We had conversations about [turning professional] but after having a really good, productive season as a freshman and such a good year defensively, I felt really good with where my game was at and I thought, ‘You know, if I can build on that going into next year I'm going to look a lot better by the end of the year,’" Buium said (via NHL.com).
"That was a big point for me, and the Wild respected that. ... They thought the same thing. I want to try to win back-to-back World Juniors and back-to-back college championships. It's really hard to win two in a row, and you want to be on those teams, experience that, see what it's like and kind of get that experience."
After a standout rookie season, leading NCAA defensemen with 50 points in 42 games, Buium is set to continue his progress and make a significant impact in college and, eventually, in the NHL.
