WATCH: Mutiple Red Wings-Devils fights break out in heated 3rd period
In a game between the Detroit Red Wings and the New Jersey Devils on Thursday, multiple fights broke out in the third period. With 8:43 left, the Wings led 3-2 after only 16 shots. The Devils, trailing by a goal, were trying hard to score, despite having 33 shots on goal.
The fights started when Devils captain Nico Hischier skated toward the net. Red Wings defenseman Ben Chiarot tackled him, stopping his scoring chance. Soon, Red Wings forward Lucas Raymond pushed Devils winger Timo Meier near the boards, which led to a big scrum, with players from both teams joining in.
B/R Open Ice shared a video of the fight and captioned:
"Chiarot and Kovacevic chucked them after everyone thought it was done + the two captains chirped on the way to the box"
Hischier scored two goals against the Red Wings. Earlier, he had also scored two goals and one assist in Saturday's overtime loss to the Capitals. The Devils have lost their last three games, going 5-4-1. They sit in first place in the Metropolitan Division.
The Red Wings are on a three-game winning streak, improving their record to 4-3-0. They are second in the Atlantic Division, having beaten the Islanders and the Predators. The two teams play each other again on Nov. 29 at 3 p.m. EST.
Devils fall short against Detroit Red Wings with coach Sheldon Keefe disappointed by calls
In a close game against the Red Wings, the Devils suffered a tough loss. Coach Sheldon Keefe expressed his frustration after Brenden Dillon received a roughing penalty for being boarded by Christian Fischer. That led to the Wings capitalizing on the power play, scoring to take a 3-2 lead.
Keefe felt that Fischer should have been penalized for the hit, expressing disappointment in his team’s lack of discipline. He noted that the quick goals against them and a too-many-men penalty significantly hurt their chances.
“Obviously, I think there should be a penalty on the initial hit, I think it’s quite clear," Keefe said (via NHL.com).
"Another one I think when the refs get a chance to look back at they’re going to see that differently. Disappointed we come out of that shorthanded of course and we don’t get the kill.”
Devils captain Nico Hischier remained positive about the team's effort. He opened the scoring and later tied the game at 3-3. While he recognized that the quick goals against them and the poor penalty kill were issues, he also saw some good aspects in their performance.
A late high-sticking penalty by Dawson Mercer allowed Patrick Kane to score the winning goal for the Wings before Michael Rasmussen added an empty-net goal to win the game 5-3. The Devils need to address their mistakes and focus on building from their strengths.
