Edmonton Oilers lost 2-0 to Winnipeg Jets at Young Star Classic
The Edmonton Oilers rookies concluded their Young Star Classic tournament with a 2-0 defeat to the Winnipeg Jets rookies at the South Okanagan Events Centre.
Daniel Torgersson and Henri Nikkanen were the scorers for the Jets, while Thomas Millic made 27 saves as he kept a clean sheet against Edmonton. Brett Brochu, meanwhile, made 32 saves for the Oilers and conceded two goals on 34 shots.
After the game, Brochu said (via NHL.com):
"I thought I kept a lot of pucks to my chest," Brochu said post-game. "I was really square, kept things simple and thought my skating improved a lot. The speed of the game was quick, so it was nice that I could keep up with it and I felt good."
Oilers rookie HC Colin Chaulk addressed the team's performance, acknowledging that while they didn't achieve the desired outcome, the focus remains on the overall improvement. .
He emphasized that everyone understands the importance of results in their business but reckons the players need to recognize that there's still work to be done.
"Unfortunately, we didn't push it over the goal line, but it's about the process at this point," coach Colin Chaulk said. "We all understand it's a result-driven business, but they understand that they're not as far as they think.
The Oilers rookies return to Edmonton on Monday, bringing along a group of skaters ready to vie for spots on the NHL roster this week.
