Wayne Gretzky congratulates former teammates following induction into Oilers Wall of Fame
Wayne Gretzky congratulated Craig MacTavish and Randy Gregg on their induction into the Edmonton Oilers Wall of Fame. On Friday morning, MacTavish and Gregg were honored before the evening ceremony, where their names were permanently added to the Hall of Fame at Rogers Place.
Wayne Gretzky shared a photo from the ceremony on Instagram and wrote:
"Congratulations to Craig MacTavish and Randy Gregg!"
This was a special moment for two players who contributed to the Oilers’ history. MacTavish expressed his gratitude, sharing how humbled he felt by the honor.
"It is humbling. Everybody says that, but for a guy like me…" MacTavish said (via ctvnews.com) "You know, I was a decent player until I got to the (National Hockey League) and I had to adapt because there were many players, certainly on this team, that had much more talent than I did."
During his eight seasons with the Oilers, MacTavish helped win three Stanley Cups in 1987, 1988, and 1990. He also served as team captain from 1992 to 1994. Gregg, who played for the Oilers from 1982 to 1990, was also honored. He is one of the few players who participated in all five championship seasons during the Oilers' dynasty.
After retiring from hockey, Gregg finished his medical residency at the University of Alberta. He still practices medicine today. At the event, he joked about not knowing where his Stanley Cup rings were. He acknowledged their importance, saying:
"I don't even know where my Stanley Cup rings are," Gregg said. "I know I have five of them, but it's not that I wear them. It's just that we worked hard enough together to get them."
Former teammates like Kevin Lowe, Lee Fogolin, and Craig Simpson were at the ceremony. The event ended with an on-ice tribute after the Oilers faced the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday night. The Hall of Fame started in 2022 and has honored legends like Wayne Gretzky and Messier.
Can Alex Ovechkin break Wayne Gretzky's record this season?
Alex Ovechkin has 853 career goals and needs just 40 more to break Wayne Gretzky’s record of 894. This season is important for Ovechkin as he tries to reach this goal. He has scored over 41 goals in 13 seasons. However, last year was tough for him, and he finished the season with only 23 goals.
Despite last year's struggles, Ovechkin averages about 45 goals each season over his 19-year career. He scored 42 goals in the 2022-23 season, proving he still has the ability. However, at 39 years old, many players start to decline. The Capitals have made roster changes that could support him, but Ovechkin will need to adapt his game.
