"We were asleep": Jim Montgomery displeased after Boston Bruins' 4-1 loss to Kings
The Boston Bruins lost 4-1 to the Los Angeles Kings in their fifth preseason game, at Quebec City’s Videotron Centre. The Bruins struggled, getting outshot 23-12 and allowing goals at even strength, on the power play and while shorthanded.
Coach Jim Montgomery was frustrated with the team's performance. He noted that the Kings played strong defense, making it difficult for the Bruins to score. Montgomery said that the Bruins needed to adjust by putting pucks behind the Kings defenders.
As the preseason comes to an end, many players are looking forward to the regular season. Montgomery said that for veterans, this time is about timing. Younger players must show their skills to make the team, but the Bruins lacked urgency, especially in the first period, where they only had two shots.
Montgomery also criticized his team's slow start and lack of movement. He was disappointed that they couldn't create speed or offense.
(0:42) "I thought in the first we were asleep um you know we weren't moving our legs we said one point the defenseman aren't moving their feet and the forwards aren't skating away from them to create any kind of speed so wasn't a very good game by us in in that sense," Montgomery said.
Despite the loss, Montgomery is focused on how the team progresses in training camp. He hopes this uninspired performance is just a bump in the road.
The game changed in the second period when Quinton Byfield scored two quick goals. The first goal came on a 2-on-1 rush after Charlie McAvoy got caught up ice. Byfield scored again just 25 seconds later, making it tougher for the Bruins. Patrick Brown scored the Bruins' only goal but couldn't spark the team.
In the third period, the Boston Bruins had a chance to tie the game with a power play. Instead, they allowed a shorthanded goal by Adrian Kempe, making it 3-1. Byfield completed his hat-trick on a power play, sealing the Kings' victory.
Boston Bruins honored Patrice Bergeron with a special pregame ceremony
The Boston Bruins also honored former captain Patrice Bergeron, a Quebec native, before the game. He showed interest in joining a future NHL team in Quebec.
"It's something I would definitely consider," Bergeron said. "I was a big fan growing up, and it would definitely be special.
"But with that being said, I've been a part of an organization for 20 years in Boston, which has a big place in my heart as well. I don't know what the real answer is to that, but it's definitely something I would consider," he added (via NESN.com)
