"We deserved better": Buffalo Sabre coach Lindy Ruff makes his feelings known after franchise's 13th straight loss
The Buffalo Sabres experienced their 13th consecutive defeat on Saturday night, losing 3-1 to the Boston Bruins at TD Garden. Despite keeping the game close through two periods, the Sabres were unable to find the back of the net in the third period to secure a much-needed win.
"I know, we deserved better," said Sabres head coach Lindy Ruff after the loss. "We didn't quite get the next play. At the end of the game, I thought they probably could have called the diving penalty along with the trip, we killed it off. When it is going bad, it goes bad."
The Bruins were the first team to score a goal with Charlie Coyle scoring a goal at 8:15 of the first period. The Sabres responded with JJ Peterka’s power play goal in the late second period to even the game at 1-1.
However, the Bruins responded in the third with Morgan Geekie's goal to make the score 2-1. Then, Brad Marchand buried an empty net goal in the final minute of the game to make the final score 3-1.
Ruff summarized the game, saying:
“I just think if you look at how we managed the puck at the tail end of the game, our powerplay scored. I thought we had big blocks at crucial times. We had some great O-zone time."
"Like I said we didn't find the next play. We had a couple of pucks that bounced over, even in the third period bounced over the sticks and it is 1-1. Clifton off the crossbar. I think they had 14 shots after about 15 minutes, or something like that.” he added.
Joonas Korpisalo made 19 saves for the Bruins. James Reimer stopped 16 shots for the Buffalo Sabres.
Buffalo Sabres' alternate captain Alex Tuch finds silver lining in 3-1 loss to Bruins
Despite falling 3-1 to the Bruins, Buffalo Sabres alternate captain Alex Tuch highlighted positive takeaways from his team's performance.
Tuch pointed to a noticeable shift in the team's approach, emphasizing their improved maturity and solidarity on the ice.
"I think we played a more mature game tonight. A lot of guys were playing for one another and we hadn’t had that in a long time.” Tuch observed.
The forward specifically commended the team's increased effort in shot-blocking and aggressive backchecking. The Buffalo Sabres will next face the New York Islanders on Monday.
