"We have to find Ovi" - Legendary NHL HC shares hilarious incident when Alexander Ovechkin broke his curfew
Alexander Ovechkin was once a young player on legendary Washington Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau's team. Boudreau went on the "Spittin' Chiclets" podcast on Tuesday and revealed that he was once pressured to enact curfews on his teams, something that didn't match up with many of his young players. They liked to party, and Boudreau didn't mind that they spent time out on the town.
He didn't want to impose the curfews he was asked to and recalled one incident involving Ovechkin.
"I remember the one night I'm trying to get Alex [Ovechkin] in," Boudreau said. "There's 5 to 11 and I'm calling Ian, I said, 'Ian, we have to find Ovi!' Cause I have to report back to George who's in and who's not in. And at two minutes to go, Ovi phones me. All you hear is the Russian electric music in the background."
The coach laughed and said that he asked Ovechkin if he was in for curfew, and Ovechkin said that he was. Boudreau didn't even pretend to push the issue, as he agreed and said he'd see him the next day.
Bruce Boudreau predicted potential historic season for Alexander Ovechkin
Alexander Ovechkin is going to miss some time as he continues to recover from injury. The Washington Capitals star was marching toward Wayne Gretzky's all-time record.
Before the season, former Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau said he felt that Ovechkin was in shape for a good season.
“I happened to FaceTime him, or he FaceTimed me about a week ago, and I said, ‘Stand back, give somebody else the phone, I want to see if you’re in good shape,' Boudreau said in September, via RMNB. "He looked like he was in a lot better shape, and so I think he’s the type of guy, if you know Alex, that if somebody says you can’t do something, he’s going to try to prove you wrong."
Ovechkin was on pace to break the record in March, but the injury he suffered is going to delay it a couple of months. It makes it hard for him to pass Gretzky's total in 2024-25, but he might be able to in 2025-26 if he continues to play.
