"We're not looking for moral victories": Colorado Avalanche HC Jared Bednar critical of team's mentality in surprising loss to Blackhawks
The Colorado Avalanche lost 5-2 to the Chicago Blackhawks, ending their five-game winning streak. After the game, coach Jared Bednar criticized the team's mindset. He found the loss disappointing, especially after their recent performances. This was the second game in a row where the team struggled to find its rhythm. Bednar pointed out the Avalanche's lack of offensive threat compared to earlier games.
He said:
"We're not looking at moral victories here right now. It wasn’t our best game, (we) needed to be better. It’s two (games) in a row, we were way more dangerous last night than we were tonight on the offensive side of it. They just looked quicker, stronger, hungrier, and their execution was better."
Ryan Donato stood out for the Blackhawks, scoring two goals, including a key empty-net goal. His performance helped the Blackhawks end a four-game losing streak. The Blackhawks took an early lead, scoring three goals in the first period. Bednar noted the Avalanche's challenges, especially in the second period when they hesitated to shoot the puck.
"When you’re tired and if your mental game is not there, you’re not sharp, then you usually aren’t making the right decisions, and the execution struggle. We were reluctant to shoot the puck (in the 2nd period)," Bednar said.
The Avalanche showed signs of fatigue from their recent back-to-back games. Goaltender Alexandar Georgiev had a shaky start, allowing three goals in the first period. He did assist on an offensive play, but the team's energy was lacking.
Colorado Avalanche's Cale Makar calls for defensive improvements ahead of Lightning game
During a post-game press conference, Cale Makar shared Bednar's concerns, saying the team wasn’t good enough defensively. He said:
"Just have to be better defensively. Wasn't good enough defensively, and then just… we’re trying to be too cute with it tonight. A lot of perimeter play in the O-zone, not getting a lot of shots to the net. So, we started to figure it out in the 3rd a little bit, but we just gotta figure that out quicker."
As they prepare to face the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Avalanche need to regroup. The Lightning have a record of six wins and three losses, with two wins and two losses on the road. In contrast, the Avalanche have five wins and five losses, including two wins and four losses at home. The game is scheduled for Oct. 30 at 7:00 p.m. MDT.
