NHL: Stanley Cup Playoffs-Colorado Avalanche at Tampa Bay Lightning

When Nazem Kadri celebrated being first Muslim to win Stanley Cup by taking coveted trophy inside his local mosque

In August 2022, Calgary Flames forward Nazem Kadri made history by becoming the first Muslim to win the Stanley Cup. But it was his way of celebration with the Stanley Cup which impressed fans. He brought the coveted trophy to his hometown mosque in London, Ontario.

On Saturday, ESPN put out a post on X which had a throwback clip of Kadri taking Lord Stanley to a local mosque.

"When Nazem Kadri brought the Stanley Cup to a local mosque in his hometown"

Kadri won the Cup with the Colorado Avalanche.

“That’s the goal, to inspire and motivate the youth," Kadri said. "This young generation is looking for role models, so I do the best I can and I’m just happy I get to share it with everybody.”

The day began at the London Muslim Mosque, a big part of Kadri’s upbringing. Hundreds gathered, many in Kadri’s Toronto Maple Leafs jerseys, to celebrate his achievement.

Religious and community leaders praised Kadri’s character and his impact on the community. Mayor Ed Holder had even declared him “the greatest Londoner” and presented him with the key to the city.

The celebration continued at Victoria Park, where Kadri addressed the crowd.

“There’s a reason why I’m not just celebrating this with my family. I wanted to come out here and share with you guys,” Kadri said to the crowd. (via AP news) “You’ve been supporters of mine from Day One and I can’t tell you enough how much that means to me."
“I’m hoping that this inspires and motivates kids to pursue your dreams because I never thought this was possible."

He continued, expressing his delight at the reception.

"I had some great support and people made me believe. If you believe, you can achieve. To see everybody come here and support me just inspires and motivates me even more, so we’re going to try to run this thing back (when) I’m going to Calgary,” Kadri added.
