"Wish it would've happened tonight": Connor McDavid makes his feelings known about being on the cusp of 1000 career point milestone
Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid is on the verge of reaching 1,000 career points, a milestone achieved by only 98 players in NHL history. After an impressive four-point night in an overtime win against the New York Islanders on November 12, McDavid now sits at 999 career points. McDavid shared his thoughts while speaking with Sportsnet reporter Gene Principe after the game.
"Wish it would've happened tonight," McDavid said. "I thought we had enough to get there tonight, but, you know, ultimately, sitting on 999…”
Reflecting on this milestone, McDavid took a moment to appreciate everyone who helped him along the way. He thanked teammates, coaches, Edmonton’s management, and the ownership group for supporting his career.
“These milestones… are a great time to reflect,” McDavid said. “Think about all the great players that I played with, that I play with still, the coaches, the staff here in Edmonton. The ownership management, everybody.”
McDavid showed gratitude for the journey so far, though he’s eager to reach the next point.
"You know, it's a great time to reflect, but one more to go. And we'll see you Thursday night for that." McDavid added.
McDavid’s performance against New York Islanders was his best of the season so far. He scored a goal, tallied three assists, and took eight shots on goal. This recent surge puts him at seven points and 12 shots in just the last two games. For the season, McDavid now has five goals, 12 assists, and a plus-5 rating over 13 games.
When he earns his next point, likely in Thursday’s game against the Nashville Predators, Connor McDavid will become the 99th player in NHL history to reach 1,000 points. It’s a major achievement that shows his skill, hard work, and dedication since he first entered the league in 2015.
Connor McDavid praised teammate Leon Draisaitl after OT win
The Edmonton Oilers secured a 4-3 overtime win against the New York Islanders, led by Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. McDavid, who earned four points, praised Draisaitl’s skill, calling him, per NHL.com:
“Just an amazing finisher, an amazing player. He’s playing really well."
Draisaitl scored first with a power-play one-timer early in the second period. The Islanders tied it, but Evan Bouchard gave the Oilers a 2-1 lead with a wrist shot early in the third period. McDavid then extended the lead to 3-1 with a backhand goal.
The Islanders fought back, with Anders Lee scoring twice late to send the game to overtime. In overtime, Connor McDavid made a key pass to Draisaitl, who scored the game-winner from the left circle.
