Yaroslav Askarov's on-ice antics influence Preds’ decision to move on from prospect goalie: Reports
Nashville Predators GM Barry Trotz discussed the rationale behind trading top goaltending prospect Yaroslav Askarov. Trotz cited Yaroslav Askarov’s behavior as part of the reason for the trade, as reported by Predators insider Michael Gallagher.
Trotz said:
“Yaroslav Askarov's on-ice antics played a little bit of a factor in wanting to move on from him.”
The statement provided an interesting insight into the motivation that led the Predators to trade one of the best goaltending prospects in a while. Of course, having Juuse Saros on the team made the decision much easier.
Gallagher also added this intriguing quote:
"That kid cares more about himself than the team, and that's not good."
If that’s indeed the case, the Nashville management would rather move on from a player who seems to be more self-centered than focused on the team.
While Gallagher pointed out that Yaroslav Askarov’s behavior was “a little bit” of a factor, that phrasing leaves room to believe that there may have been something else driving the Preds to trade Askarov.
Meanwhile, the San Jose Sharks felt that Askarov was worth parting with a first-round pick and two prospects. Perhaps Askarov could turn over a new page in San Jose, putting behind whatever negative perceptions he may have had in Nashville.
Is Yaroslav Askarov worth what the Sharks paid for him?
The San Jose Sharks have up their own 2025 first-round pick, plus former first-rounder David Edstrom and fellow goaltending prospect Magnus Chrona.
On the surface, the Sharks paid a high price for Askarov. San Jose essentially flipped two first-round picks for Askarov. But when looking at Askarov’s enormous potential, the price may seem like a bargain.
There's no telling what Edstrom could do in the NHL. Thus far, he projects to be a middle-six forward, while the Sharks’ 2025 first-rounder is a huge question mark. Unless the Sharks get the No. 1 overall pick once again, the pick itself may fail to yield a high-end prospect.
As for Chrona, the Preds get another netminder to replace Askarov. It's highly unlikely that Chrona would see any NHL action unless injuries become a factor for the team.
Overall, it seems like the Predators got a substantial haul for Askarov. If Trotz is to be believed, the Preds got two first-round picks for a player whose attitude and behavior didn;t mesh well with the organization.
It remains to be seen who got the best of this trade, but if Askarov delivers on his talent, the Sharks could end up fleecing Nashville.
