"You aren’t working" - Ex-Blues player shares his thoughts on Craig Berube's recent outbursts aimed at Maple Leafs bench
A video of Craig Berube yelling at his Toronto Maple Leafs bench went viral on Wednesday. It also sparked a reaction from William Nylander, who said "sometimes it's called for." It's a different coaching style than the Maple Leafs stars have been used to.
Berube utilized this style with the St. Louis Blues, his former team. A former Blues player said, according to Elliotte Friedman on 32 Thoughts, that it's not a good sign for the players.
“If he’s doing that, he’s saying, ‘You aren’t working and you aren’t competing,’” one ex-Blue said.
Craig Berube's Maple Leafs are off to a good start. After a thrilling 4-3 overtime victory against the red-hot Washington Capitals, the team improved to 10-6-2, solidifying second place in the Atlantic Division.
They have struggled at times, and Berube has been quick to call it out both on the bench and after the games in press conferences. This is even though Auston Matthews has not played due to an upper-body injury.
Craig Berube opens up on lineup changes before big win
The Maple Leafs were coming off a disappointing shutout at the hands of the Ottawa Senators. Head coach Craig Berube decided to tweak the lineup, and the results paid off.
He said after via Maple Leafs Hot Stove:
"JT and Mitch have played together before. Domi and Willy have played together before. I threw Kampfer up there. I thought that line was really good for us tonight — Kampf, Holmberg, and Steeves. They controlled a lot of the play when they were out there. They were strong on pucks and controlled it. Steven Lorentz played center for us for most of camp. These guys are all fine with that."
Former captain John Tavares had a two-point night, including the game-winning goal. The Leafs defense held Alex Ovechkin, who is charging towards the NHL's all-time goals record, in check, though he did have an assist.
