Projecting Connor McDavid's next Oilers contract after Leon Draisaitl extension
The Edmonton Oilers signed star forward Leon Drasaitl to an eight-year, $112 million deal. Drasaitl becomes the highest-paid player in the NHL when the deal kicks in during the 2025-26 NHL season, as he is set to make $14 million per season.
Following Draisaitl's extension, the focus will turn to Connor McDavid's extension. The Oilers captain is eligible to sign an extension on July 1, as he still has two years left on his deal.
After Draisaitl extended, most assume McDavid will re-sign with Edmonton, and if he does, he will be the highest-paid player in the NHL. McDavid could reach $16 million per season; however, the star forward took a discount on his last contract so Edmonton could have a better team.
$15.97 million per season does make sense. If McDavid signs for $15.97 million per year on an eight-year deal, Draisaitl and McDavid's salaries would combine for $29.97 million. Incidentally, that figure would reflect the two players' jersey numbers.
Regardless, McDavid will be the highest-paid player in the NHL and will come in around $16 million on his next contract.
Insider says it's a '100 percent shot' Connor McDavid re-signs with Oilers
Edmonton re-signing Draisaitl is a massive boost for the Oilers. Following Draisaitl's extension, NHL insider Frank Seravalli said McDavid will definitely sign an extension.
“It’s now a 100 percent shot that Connor McDavid re-signs with the Edmonton Oilers,” Seravalli said to Bob Stauffer of Oilers Now (via the Edmonton Journal). “Because there is no chance that he’s leaving. I didn’t think there was to begin with. And certainly not now with Leon Draisaitl looked up for the long term... There’s no way that Leon is signing if there is a chance that Connor is not.”
If the Oilers re-sign McDavid on July 1, it would be a massive boost to the franchise, which has two of the best players in the NHL. It would also keep their Stanley Cup window open for however long they are playing hockey for.
McDavid recorded 32 goals and 100 assists last season with the Oilers.
