On Wednesday, the Chicago Blackhawks named Nick Foligno its 35th captain in franchise history. He became the first Blackhawks captain since 2023 when Jonathan Toews was the captain.
Chicago is one of the historic original six teams in the NHL. With that, here are the five best captains in Blackhawks history.

#5, Darryl Sutter
Darryl Sutter was the captain of the Chicago Blackhawks from 1982 until 1987 and is considered to be one of the greatest players of all time.
Sutter played just 406 games due to injury, but he made an impact with Chicago. He played his entire career with the Blackhawks and finished with 161 goals and 118 assists for 279 points.
#4, Stan Mikita
Stan Mikita is also considered to be one of the best players in NHL history, but he's fourth on this list because he was captain for only two seasons.
Mikita played his entire 22-year NHL career with Chicago. Mikita had his number retired by the Blackhawks and finished his career with 541 goals and 926 assists for 1467 points in 1396 games.
#3, Dirk Graham
Dirk Graham played for Chicago from 1987 to 1995, and was captain for seven seasons. During his tenure as captain, the team never missed the playoffs.
Although Graham never hoisted the Stanley Cup as a captain, he did lead the team to the finals in 1992.
Graham played 546 games with the Blackhawks with 152 goals and 191 assists for 343 points.
#2, Chris Chelios
Chris Chelios played for the Blackhawks from 1990 to 1999, and was captain for four seasons. His number was retired by the franchise in February.
Chelios was one of the top players in the NHL, and in nine years with the Blackhawks, he recorded 92 goals and 395 assists for 487 points. Although he won two Stanley Cups as a member of the Detroit Red Wings, he still is a legend in Chicago.
#1, Jonathan Toews
Jonathan Toews is not only the best captain in Chicago Blackhawks history, but he may be the best player.
Toews played for the Blackhawks from 2007 until 2023 and led the team to three Stanley Cups. He was a focal point of Chicago's dynasty and spent his entire career thus far with the Blackhawks.
Toews skated 1067 games recording 372 goals and 511 assists for 883 points. While Toews has not yet officially retired, it's only a matter of time until his jersey will hang in the rafters at the United Center.
