Flames GM Craig Conroy addresses Jacob Markstrom's frustration amid trade rumors
Calgary Flames general manager Craig Conroy has opened up on the trade rumors of goalie Jacob Markstrom. Markstrom has been the subject of trade rumors, but the GM says he hasn't asked for a trade.
Markstrom was rumored to be dealt at the deadline and he voiced his frustration that he wasn't moved. However, Conroy says despite all that, the goalie hasn't asked for a trade.
“He’s never come and said he wants out,” said the Flames GM to Sportsnet.
The rumors of Markstrom being traded went very public and Conroy says that bothered him, as he doesn't feel like that was fair to Markstrom.
“It’s part of the game, but it does bother me because it’s always out there — there’s something about the goalie all the time and I don’t think it’s fair to the goalie either,” he said. "I feel more for him because I’ve been on the other side of this. Everyone wants to speculate and throw things out there and I don’t think it’s fair to him.”
Although Conroy says Markstrom hasn't asked for a trade, there still is a chance the goalie gets moved. He will be one of the most sought-after goalies this season, but Conroy says he isn't sure if the trade market has changed from March.
“I don’t know how the goalie market has changed,” said Conroy. "Again, it’s all speculation, and as we work through the process you just talk to teams about everything. I don’t know if the goalie market has changed, or is the same, but we work through the process here and we talk about how we make the team better and move forward.”
Markstrom has two years left on his deal that will pay him $6 million per season.
Jacob Markstrom voiced frustration over trade talks
At both the trade deadline and after the season, goalie Jacob Markstrom voiced his frustration about the rumors being public.
Markstrom signed with the Flames in 2020 on a six-year $36 million deal to leave the Vancouver Canucks to become Calgary's starting goalie.
This past season, Markstrom went 23-23-2 with a 2.78 GAA and a .905 SV%.
