Mitch Marner's agent hints Maple Leafs already working on contract negotiations with $65.4M star

As the new season approaches, the Toronto Maple Leafs are looking to extend Mitch Marner's contract to strengthen the team and boost morale. Marner's current six-year deal worth $65.4 million is set to expire at the end of the season. He is coming off an impressive campaign, scoring 88 points for the Maple Leafs.

With the new season around the corner, Marner's agent, Darren Ferris, has hinted at a potential contract negotiation. Ferris spoke to The Athletic this week and the topic of a potential new deal came up. While the agent didn't give anything away, his word choice may have inadvertently done so:

"To maintain the integrity of ongoing negotiations, it is essential that these discussions remain confidential and are conducted in a constructive manner."

The choice of the word "ongoing" could be taken to mean the negotiations have already started.

"As such, we will not be providing public updates on their status at this time," he said.

While Ferris did not want to comment, his choice of words caught people's attention. Meanwhile, Mitch Marner will be entering his ninth season with the Maple Leafs as they set out with high expectations of reaching the Stanley Cup Finals and getting their hands on the trophy.

Mitch Marner is focused on the 2024 NHL season and the Maple Leafs, rather than his contract

Toronto Maple Leafs star Mitch Marner was among the players on media duties for the franchise ahead of the team's first preseason game on Sunday. Marner, aware of the speculation surrounding his contract, addressed the situation:

"Very happy to be a Maple Leaf. It's an unbelievable privilege, but I'm not here to talk about that. I'm here to talk about the season and getting going," he said.

The upcoming season will see the Maple Leafs looking to break their Stanley Cup drought, which dates back to 1967. As the alternate captain, breaking that drought is high up on Mitch Marner's list of priorities and as an Ontario native, it would be extra special for him.

It will be interesting to see if the Leafs can break the cycle of postseason disappointments and if an extension is in the works for Marner. Leafs Nation has a potential new deal standing at around $12.25 million AAV, but whether that will be the case remains to be seen.
