Montreal Canadiens rumors: Insider speculates Juraj Slafkovsky and 22-year-old defenseman will be signed to contract extensions this summer

According to NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman, the Montreal Canadiens are considering signing forward Juraj Slafkovsky and defenseman Kaiden Guhle to contract extensions.

In his recent "32 Thoughts" note for Sportsnet, Friedman said it is anticipated that the Canadiens will aim to secure contract extensions for both Slafkovsky and Guhle.

The insider also noted that Lane Hutson is another key defenseman who has impressed in a limited number of games. With a surplus of young defensemen, the Canadiens are likely to explore their options in that area.

Additionally, they might consider making significant moves to strengthen their forward line during the summer. The Canadiens failed to make the playoffs after finishing at the bottom of the Atlantic Division with 76 points.

With a roster filled with young and talented players, it appears that the Montreal Canadiens are gearing up for a busy offseason. This period could involve signing some of their key players to long-term extensions, both on defense and offense.

Additionally, the Habs might look to bring in new faces during the offseason to enhance their team.

"It's a big change"- Juraj Slafkovsky speaks about his performance this season

Juraj Slafkovsky notched up two points in the Montreal Canadiens' final game of the season, a 5-4 overtime loss to the Detroit Red Wings on April 16.

Slafkovsky finished his campaign by tallying 50 points (20 goals and 30 assists), as compared to just 10 points last season.

Following the game against the Red Wings, Juraj Slafkovsky acknowledged his improvement and growth throughout the season (via The Hockey News):

"It’s good because I didn’t start great, but I know that I can still improve," Slafkovsky said. "I wasn’t playing the same way that I am now. It’s a big change."

Despite a slow start with just two points in his first 15 games, the 20-year-old forward made a significant improvement as the season progressed. His best spell came from January to April, when he racked up 37 points, including 16 goals, in 47 games.
