NHL Rumor: Top insider confirms Dylan Guenther and Utah closing in on $56 Million eight-year contract extension
The Utah Hockey Club will be locking up young star Dylan Guenther for the next eight seasons, insider Eliotte Friedman reports. According to Friedman, the new contract for Guenther is the max eight-year deal worth over $7 million AAV.
The $56 million contract is a major step for Utah as it looks to build a championship-caliber team. Under new management, the team has the money to spend on top-tier players and prospects, making the team far more competitive.
Guenther, the ninth overall pick from the 2021 Draft, scored 18 goals and added 17 assists for 35 points in his second season. He’s registered 50 points in 78 NHL contests in his career.
Dylan Guenther is expected to play a key role for Utah this upcoming season. Daily Faceoff projects him sliding in the right wing spot on Utah’s second line. The line features center Logan Cooley and left winger Lawson Crouse, two other highly skilled young forwards.
Utah is expecting Guenther to take the next step this season, hopefully eclipsing the 20-goal mark and potentially topping 50 points for the year.
Guenther started in the NHL last season but found himself back in the AHL in early October. However, he was recalled from the AHL in early January and did not go back. His production kept him in the NHL, cementing a lineup spot for himself this season.
Dylan Guenther working hard for a playoff spot in training camp
Unlike last season, the players on the Utah roster enter the season with a strong sense of optimism. In particular, Dylan Guenther strives to make a push for the playoffs.
The Salt Lake Tribune quoted Guenther as saying:
“If we want to compete for a playoff spot and be in the race, the first five games are important. … Starts now, starts in camp.”
The comments underscore the importance of training camp in setting the tone for a successful season. Guenther and teammates need to be ready straight out of the gate to compete for a playoff spot.
Guenther added:
“The harder we battle and go to work this week, it will prepare us for the season and the important games down the stretch. We’ll be ready for it.”
Coaches hope Guenther and his teammates will be ready as Utah looks to shed its Arizona Coyotes image and develop its own identity as a competitive playoff team.
The Utah Hockey Club has the pieces to make a strong playoff push this season. With Guenther’s attitude spreading across the team, making the playoffs could be a realistic possibility this year.
