NHL Mock Trade: Philadelphia Flyers' $33,000,000 top forward to Jets in exchange for Rutger McGroarty

The Philadelphia Flyers have been the subject of trade speculation regarding Travis Konecny, who's entering the final year of a six-year, $33 million deal signed in 2019. The Flyers are faced with a dilemma: do they re-sign the 27-year-old or move him?

On the flip side, the Winnipeg Jets are faced with a complex situation regarding prospect Rutger McGroarty, who has requested a trade out of Winnipeg. But trading McGroarty isn’t so simple.

Given the complex situation both teams are facing, fan speculation has led to an idea regarding a proposed trade between the Philadelphia Flyers and Winnipeg Jets, with the main pieces being McGroarty for Konecny.

The site Brotherly Puck ran with this fan-based trade idea:

The Philadelphia Flyers get McGroarty, while the Winnipeg Jets get Travis Konecny, Scott Laughton and a second-round pick. It’s worth pointing out that the Flyers would retain 50% of Konecny’s cap hit.

The move makes sense for the Flyers, as it would be nothing more than a cap dump. By trading Konecny and Laughton, the Flyers would save roughly $6 million, according to PuckPedia data.

As for McGroarty, the 20-year-old former first-round pick could blossom into a top-line winger. He would be just the type of player the Flyers need as they continue their rebuild.

While the proposed trade idea is only speculation at this point, one can’t help but see the logic behind it. This trade could be one of those rare instances where both teams come out ahead.

Philadelphia Flyers feel extending Konecny is important

NHL insider Pierre LeBrun has reported that Flyers GM Daniel Briere feels that extending Travis Konecny is a priority.

However, The Hockey News reported that getting an extension done isn’t simple. According to reports, Konecny is looking for roughly $10 million per season. While the reports remain unconfirmed, they would explain why the Flyers haven’t worked out a deal with Konecny yet.

The Hockey News reported Briere’s comments:

“One thing is, we’re not going to negotiate through the media, and we agreed with his group that we wouldn’t do that.”

The comments underscore the private nature of the ongoing negotiations, but Briere offered an insight:

“The one thing I can tell you is that we love him. We love him as a player. He knows that. His agency knows that. He’s an important part of our team.”

With such comments, it could be difficult to envision the Philadelphia Flyers moving Konecny. But if Konecny’s contract demands go beyond what Philly feels comfortable paying, it may have no choice but to make a deal.
