NHL trade rumors: Analyst predicts 'really solid possibility' of $17.25M Trevor Zegras exit from Ducks

Trevor Zegras has been in trade rumors for months, with several teams interested in the young Anaheim Ducks center. NHL Network analyst Stu Grimson thinks there's a strong chance Zegras could be traded before the new season or by the trade deadline. Grimson suggests that Ducks GM Pat Verbeek may not see Zegras as a key player for the future.

Grimson notes that Verbeek inherited Zegras when he became GM two years ago and pointed out that the young center needs to improve his defensive play. He speculates that if Verbeek had started with a clean slate, he might not have chosen Zegras as a cornerstone player, especially considering Zegras' trade value.

"I suspect there's a really solid possibility there. And I say that for this reason Pat Verbeek comes over as general manager going two years back now. And he inherits Trevor's Zegras." Grimson said.
"Don't get me wrong, I'm a big Zegras fan, I think he's got great offensive upside. I think there's, you know, a good bit of maturity to evolve where his game is concerned, as well on the defensive side of the puck..."
"A guy that could bring a really robust return by way of a trade. There's a good possibility that Zegras moves on. There's gotta be some fire where all that smoke has been emanating," Grimson added.

Zegras started his NHL career with two seasons of 23 goals and over 60 points. However, in his third season, injuries and poor performance limited him to six goals and 15 points in 31 games. This inconsistency raised questions about his fit with the Ducks' long-term plans.

Zegras is on a three-year, $17.25 million contract with the Ducks, earning an average annual salary of $5.75 million. Nevertheless, Grimson's analysis suggests Zegras could still be traded if the right offer comes along.

Mason McTavish projected to score 56 points with Ducks in 2024-25

NHL.com predicts Mason McTavish to score 56 points for the Ducks in 2024-25. McTavish is entering his third full NHL season. Despite injuries last season, he scored at a 54-point pace. He led the Anaheim in 5v5 scoring rate with 1.93 points per 60 minutes.

With Rich Clune as an assistant coach, Mason McTavish may get more power play minutes. Reducing penalties and improving his defensive play could increase his ice time. If he stays healthy, he will likely surpass the 56-point projection.
