NHL Trade Rumors: Elliotte Friedman speculates $6,000,000 Martin Necas' clear indication to leave Hurricanes

On the "32 Thoughts" podcast, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman provided an update about Martin Necas and his future with the Carolina Hurricanes. Friedman suggested that while Necas hasn't made any public statements, privately, he has indicated he wants to leave the team.

The 25-year-old forward has been a key player for the Hurricanes. He recorded 24 goals and 53 points in 77 regular-season games in the 2023–24 season. He also added nine points in 11 Stanley Cup Playoff games. Known for his speed and offensive awareness, Necas led the Hurricanes with 231 shots on goal last season.

According to Friedman, the Hurricanes have already started discussions with several teams about Necas. While the specifics of these conversations remain undisclosed, it's clear that Carolina is exploring its options.

Martin Necas is a pending restricted free agent and his future with the Hurricanes appears uncertain. His previous contract earned him $3 million annually (two years, $6,000,000). With his performance, he is expected to seek a substantial raise, potentially around the $6 million mark. This upcoming contract, however, seems increasingly likely to be with another organization.

The Hurricanes' general manager, Eric Tulsky, faces the challenging task of finding a suitable return for Necas. The goal is to secure assets that will benefit the Hurricanes for the next season and beyond.

For now, the rumors point to Martin Necas being available on the trade market.

Apart from Martin Necas' headline, the Hurricanes have a new GM

Eric Tulsky will become the Carolina Hurricanes' next general manager after Don Waddell resigned on May 24. Tulsky has been with the Hurricanes for 10 seasons. He has served as assistant GM since 2020. Tulsky started as an analyst in 2014–15.

"Whoever gets this job is going to be the general manager but not going to have the (usual) power," Friedman shared on June 3. "This job is going to be a facilitator who collects information and brings it to other members of the front office ... The new GM hire is not going to have the final say."

As per Friedman, Tulsky won't hold traditional GM power. He will act as a facilitator within the front office.
