NHL Trade Rumors: Insider claims Detroit Red Wings pushing hard for Jacob Trouba move
Jacob Trouba is in the headlines right now, given his potential exit from the New York Rangers. According to NHL insider Larry Brooks, the 30-year-old defenseman could be leaving the Rangers and the Detroit Red Wings look to be the frontrunners to sign the Rangers captain.
In an article for the New York Post, Brooks mentioned:
"A well-placed source has told The Post that GM Chris Drury is working on a deal to send the captain to the Red Wings, a trade that the Michigan native would presumably accept after having played as a freshman for the Wolverines in 2012-13."
According to rumors, Jacob Trouba has handed a 15-team no-trade list to the Rangers, exempting him from an unfavorable move. Although the names of the 15 teams seem to be unclear, one can hope the Red Wings are not mentioned there, as he's a Michigan native himself.
Jacob Trouba's playoffs injury confession
The New York Rangers were eliminated from the Eastern Conference Finals last season, losing to the eventual victors, the Florida Panthers. According to NHL insider Greg Wyshynski, Jacob Trouba played the latter stages of the competition with a severe ankle injury.
"Jacob Trouba said he had a broken ankle this season and that a “kidney bean sized chunk” came off it. Said it wasn’t a weight bearing bone so he could walk on it but skating didn’t feel great. Said it was “limiting,” Wyshynski wrote.
Despite winning the Mark Messier award for his phenomenal leadership in the 2023–24 season, Trouba started all 16 of the knockout stage fixtures (despite his injuries). He scored one goal and six assists in the playoffs.
It will be interesting to see where Trouba ends up next season, as the Rangers could choose to retain him at his current $8 million/year contract or the Red Wings could lure him.
