Drafted fourth overall by the Calgary Flames in the 2014 NHL Draft, he played two seasons with the Kingston Frontenacs in the OHL, scoring 54 goals and 131 points in 117 games.
Bennett became a regular for Calgary in the 2015-16 season, scoring 18 goals and 36 points. On January 13, 2016, he became the third-youngest player in NHL history to score four goals in a single game. On April 12, 2021, Bennett was traded to the Panthers, who later signed him to a four-year, $17.6 million contract extension on July 26, 2021.
