"That will never end" - When Wayne Gretzky had a heartfelt message for Oilers fans after stepping down from VC role
Wayne Gretzky stepped down as vice chairman of the Edmonton Oilers in May 2021. He took the role in 2016 as a minority partner and key advisor to the team’s owner, Daryl Katz. Gretzky announced his decision on social media, thanking the Oilers organization, the city and the fans.
"With great appreciation, I wanted to let everyone know that I have decided to step away as Vice Chairman of the Edmonton Oilers effective today," Gretzky tweeted.
Gretzky explained that the pandemic and life changes meant he couldn’t dedicate enough time to the role.
"The Oilers, their fans, and the city of Edmonton have meant the world to me and my family for over four decades - and that will never end." Gretzky wrote. "Given the pandemic and other life changes, I realize I will not be able to dedicate the time nor effort needed to support this world-class organization.
"I want to thank Daryl & Renee Katz, their family, and entire team for all the support and friendship these last several years, and wish them nothing but success."
During his tenure, Gretzky worked on business and team development for the Oilers Entertainment Group. His involvement was special for Edmonton, where he spent 10 seasons as a player. He helped the Oilers win four Stanley Cups and set numerous NHL records.
Gretzky’s resignation came shortly after the Oilers were eliminated from the 2021 playoffs by the Winnipeg Jets. Following his departure, he joined TNT’s hockey coverage as an analyst, bringing his expertise to a new audience.
Despite leaving the role, fans continue to regard Gretzky as one of hockey’s greatest figures.
Wayne Gretzky's most points record in 1981
Wayne Gretzky set an NHL record for most points in a season on March 1, 1981. He earned his 153rd point during a game against the Pittsburgh Penguins, breaking Phil Esposito's 152 points in 1971. Gretzky was just 20 years old and in his second NHL season with the Edmonton Oilers.
The record-setting point came from an assist to Mark Messier. Penguins goalie Greg Millen handed Gretzky the puck and the Pittsburgh crowd gave him a rare standing ovation. He later won four Stanley Cups with the Oilers and retired in 1999 with 61 NHL records and 2,857 career points.
Alex Ovechkin is chasing Wayne Gretzky’s 894-goal record. He has 868 goals but recently fractured his left fibula. Before the injury, he led the league with 15 goals in 18 games. He is expected to surpass the milestone upon his return.
