Top 5 wingers to watch out for in upcoming season feat. Jake Guentzel
The winger position in NHL is likely the least important position on the ice, but having good wingers can be crucial to success. They are goal scorers and can also play with a physical edge in the bottom of the lineup.
Ahead of the 2024-25 NHL season, here are five wingers to watch out for. This is not the top-five best wingers in the league, instead, it is wingers who could impact the game greatly.
Top 5 wingers to watch out for in upcoming season
#1. Jake Guentzel
Jake Guentzel signed with the Tampa Bay Lightning in free agency in a massive move. But, by signing Guentzel, that meant longtime captain Steven Stamkos left in free agency to sign with the Nashville Predators.
Guentzel is projected to be on a line with Nikita Kucherov and Brayden Point which could be one of the best lines in the NHL. If Guentzel can have success in Tampa Bay, the Lightning could be a very dangerous team come playoff time.
#2. Mitch Marner
Mitch Marner is entering the final year of his contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs and despite all the trade rumors, he is still a Maple Leaf.
Marner will have plenty to play for this season, as he became a scapegoat in Toronto with the media for their lack of playoff success.
Marner will look to prove the doubters wrong, have a good season, and enter free agency as one of the top players available.
#3. Matthew Tkachuk
Matthew Tkachuk was a key reason for the Florida Panthers winning the Stanley Cup this past season.
Tkachuk had a solid season, but after winning the Cup, there will be some intrigue on how he responds. The cup hangover is a real thing, so whether or not Tkachuk will prove that wrong will be something to watch out for.
#4. Valeri Nichushkin
Colorado Avalanche winger Valeri Nichushkin will be suspended at the beginning of the season after he was placed in Stage 3 of the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program.
When Nichushkin returns to the lineup, there will be a lot of intrigue about how he plays after the time off. The Russian winger will no doubt have a chip on his shoulder and look to prove to everyone he has put the issues past him and can be one of the best players in the NHL.
#5. Patrik Laine
Patrik Laine has requested a trade out of Columbus, and until he gets traded, he is a player to watch.
When Laine is at his best, he is one of the best players in the NHL and can be one of the best goal-scorers. But his health and consistency have been an issue, but perhaps a change of scenery will rejuvenate him.
