What happened to Connor McDavid? HC Kris Knoblauch reveals plans for Oilers star's injury management
Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid left Monday's game against the Columbus Blue Jackets with a lower body injury after crashing into the boards in the first period.
The incident occurred when McDavid was seemingly tripped by Ivan Provorov near the boards, causing him to lose his edge and slide near the wall. He briefly returned to the Oilers bench but didn't come back onto the ice for the rest of the game.
The Oilers went on to lose the game 6-1 without their leader on the ice. After the lopsided loss, Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch provided a brief update on McDavid's status.
"Just he's going to go back to Edmonton, and he's going to get evaluated. I'll have something tomorrow," said Knoblauch to reporters.
While the coach didn't specify the exact nature or severity of McDavid's injury, TSN reporter Ryan Rishaug added that early indications were that it was "nothing too serious" for the superstar center.
“Early word out of Columbus is that it’s nothing too serious with McDavid at this point.”
For now, the team and its fans will anxiously await further updates on the evaluation of McDavid's injury on Tuesday.
Dr. Harjas Grewal analyses Connor McDavid's injury
Dr. Harjas Grewal, a respected sports injury expert, has offered a cautiously optimistic assessment of the situation.
Based on available footage and typical injury patterns, Dr. Grewal believes that McDavid likely sustained a mild left ankle sprain but acknowledges that the limited camera angles make a definitive analysis challenging.
The fact that Connor McDavid continued skating after the incident supports this relatively positive outlook. Dr. Grewal tweeted:
"No great angle of McDavid injury.Probably a mild left ankle sprain if you made me bet on it but that’s just pattern recognition of prior slides, no video evidence here. Definitely doesn’t look like a broken bone just based on amount of force and him skating after."
Connor McDavid rarely misses time due to injury, so it would be an uncommon occurrence for the 27-year-old. Last season, he only missed six games. Meanwhile, the Oilers' next game is on the road against the Nashville Predators on Thursday.
