"You'll never be as good as your dad in hockey": When Wayne Gretzky's eldest son Ty opened up about facing criticism for his hockey skills

NHL legend Wayne Gretzky's eldest son, Ty once opened up about the relentless comparison between his hockey skills and those of his father, as well as the scathing criticism he faced for not living up to his four-time Stanley cup winning father's legacy.

In a 2006 Interview with The NY Times, a then-15-year-old Ty Gretzky shared his thoughts, saying:

“I get smack-talked all the time on the ice from other players.”He continued, “Just like, ‘I thought you were going to be a lot better,’ stuff like that.”

Ty in the interview spoke about the constant scrutiny and comparisions to his father, Wayne Gretzky, famously known as "the Great One", and widely regarded as the greatest hockey player in the history of professional hockey.

Speaking with "Thousand Oaks Acorn", Ty confessed that he had grown tired of the constant media attention, prompting him to removed his last name from the back of his jersey, so that he could be blend in and be unrecognizable, if only for a while. Ty said,

“Somehow people in the stands would just find out who I was and yell, ‘You’ll never be as good as your dad in hockey"

Ty also shared in the interview that during his second season of competitive hockey, he faced ridicule from opponents while playing center for the lowest-level team at Shattuck-St. Mary’s School. Despite recording four goals and six assists in 29 matches, he believed his famous last name created lofty expectation, and he was mocked for not meeting them.

Although Ty didn't really pursue hockey professionally due to the constant comparision and srutiny, his passion for the sport remained as it is. This shared love of hockey has become a bonding experience with his father, as they now often team up to host hockey camps across North America under The Gretzky Hockey School, which Ty co-founded with his father in 2014.
