"I had to force food into my mouth"- When Michael Phelps opened up about 'little things' that played a huge role in his success

Michael Phelps once opened up about focussing on small aspects that played a huge role in his success as a swimmer. The American swimmer shared that he had dreamt of achieveing someting that had never been done before in the swimming world and had made up his mind to do everything that would help him achieve his goals.

Along with his rigorous training routines Michael Phelps shared that he had a massive 10,000 calorie diet to fuel himself which competing on the global stage. The most decorated Olympian shared that there were times in his career where he could not eat due to tiredness however, he had to force himself with food to keep with his target calorie intake and prepare his body for competition.

While speaking about his routine in 2020 in an interview with HT, Michael Phelps revealed that he would be perplexed whenever he thought about his routine during the time he used to compete. Phelps shared that he used to focus on minute details of his day in order and tailor it with his future competitions and long term goals in foresight.

“It was crazy, if you think about it, if you have a goal that’s so high, that’s so far away that nobody really dreams of a goal like that, all of those little things play such a huge role," he said.

Furthermore, he shared that he has nightmares of people trying to force him with food.

"If I was tired and did not want to eat but I needed to eat, I had to force food into my mouth. It’s hard for me sometimes to really like to eat. I have nightmares of people just trying to force food into my system. But that was a part of me having the opportunity to do what I did," he added.

Michael Phelps opened up about his diet in an interview with NBC. The American shared that due to his demanding training schedule as well as appearances in multiple events during swimming meets needed him to have a huge calorie intake and revealed that he was supposed to have 8,000 to 10,000 calories in a day.

Moreover, despite such a calorie intake Phelps reportedly had a 8 per cent body fat percentage during the time he used to compete professionally.

“I was told that I was supposed to eat between eight and 10,000 calories a day. I just sort of try to cram whatever I can into my body. It’s pretty much whatever I feel like eating, I’m going to eat," she said.

Michael Phelps was very particular with his diet plan and would follow it even during the time he would be overseas for his races to maintain his body at an optimum level.
