Baylor track and field star Alexis Brown breaks down physical demands of competing in sprints and long jump simultaneously
Baylor Bears track and field athlete Alexis Brown recently spoke about competing as a sprinter and long jumper simultaneously. Brown, a Texas native, has also been an NCAA Outdoor All-American in long jump and sprint events such as the 4x100m.
She has been a standout performer for the Bears in both of these events. However, competing in two athletic events simultaneously demands a lot of hard work and skill set that she recently shed light on.
In a recent conversation with DyeStat.com, Brown shared that competing in two events is hard sometimes, especially when it is in the same meet as the Indoor nationals. She further explained the differences in techniques required to be a long jumper and a sprinter.
"It can be hard, especially indoor nationals literally I had to become the first jumper, I was supposed to be one of the first jumpers. So, I took my first jump, hoping that was it, so I can go in the 60m. It's completely different, my speed is what makes me jump far because that speed carries me through the air," said Brown.
"The first couple of steps are different, when you are sprinting, they are quick, low, when you are long jumper, they are powerful."
Speaking in the interview, Alexis Brown also said that in her training sessions, her coach frequently has to remind her about the type of practice sessions they will be doing on a respective day.
Brown has won several accolades with the Baylor Bears. She was the Big 12 Conference's Women's Performer of the Year in 2024. Notably, she won two gold medals in the long jump and 4x100m events during the Big 12 Championships.
