"Hit them where it hurts" - Riley Gaines reacts as Texas AG Ken Paxton sues the NCAA for 'false, deceptive' practices in women's sports
Riley Gaines recently reacted to the attorney general of Texas' move against the NCAA. Ken Paxton has decided to sue the NCAA for 'false, deceptive' practices in women's sports.
According to the press release, Paxton has accused the NCAA of allowing 'mixed sex competitions' in the guise of women's sports, where biological males are competing against their female counterparts.
Gaines reacted to this situation as she posted on her X handle [formerly Twitter],
"BREAKING: AG Ken Paxton (TX) is suing @NCAA for "engaging in false, deceptive, and misleading practices by marketing sporting events as "women's" competitions" then allowing men to participate.
This is AWESOME. Hit them where it hurts! I hope more states do the same."
Gaines had recently recounted her harrowing experience at the NCAA Championships in 2022, which had led her to protest against the bias shown towards the transgender swimmer Lia Thomas. In her conversation with Fox News, Gaines stated,
"I can't even put into words the feeling of humiliation, the feelings of embarrassment, it was awkward, it was uncomfortable, and it was a totally violating experience to be in that locker room and to be reprimanded as women. If we even dared to question this policy out loud we were the ones who were sent to sensitivity training, we were the ones who were told to learn how to be comfortable, and how to feel okay with this."
Riley Gaines has been campaigning for the exclusion of trans athletes from women's sports since 2022. She also sued the NCAA for their policy towards female athletes along with 16 other female athletes in April 2024.
Riley Gaines on the Senate judiciary hearing against the NCAA
Riley Gaines had also reacted to the senator's inquiry against the NCAA at the Capitol Hill. The NCAA was questioned on several issues, including their policy towards including trans athletes in women's sports.
The NCAA head Charlie Baker was interrogated as well. However, he refused to answer most of the questions, saying that he is not accountable since Title IX doesn't apply to the NCAA.
However, this didn't go down well with many senators, including Josh Hawley, who called him out for his stance. Hawley stated,
"You are in court at this moment arguing that Title IX doesn't apply to the NCAA which is astounding to me given the amount of federal money the NCAA gets."
Gaines responded to the situation by sharing the comment as well as the video on her X handle, as she stated,
"The NCAA is led by cowards who can't find it within themselves to protect women."
Riley Gaines had recently campaigned against the inclusion of volleyball player Blaire Fleming [who is reportedly a transgender] in the San Jose State University team. She also backed the five educational institutions who forfeited their matches against the San Jose State Spartans at the NCAA Mountain West Conference Volleyball League.
