"If we're racing for millions, and it's 100m, then we can race" - Noah Lyles snaps back at Tyreek Hill's 50 yard challenge
Noah Lyles and Miami Dolphins receiver Tyreek Hill have been beefing in recent days and the former has finally accepted the challenge to race the NFL player. However, Lyles would only be down for a race against Hill if his conditions are met.
During an interview with NBC News, Noah Lyles made it clear that he is not out to play games and he would only face him in the 100m, not the 50m as Hill had suggested. Lyles added that there needs to be a sponsor for the event before he steps on the track.
"I mean if somebody wants to sponsor the event and we’re racing for millions of dollars and it’s on a track and we’re running 100 meters, then sure, we can race. But it has to be legit, I’m not here to do gimmicks."
The Olympic gold medalist pointed out that he has worked hard to earn the ‘fastest man in the world’ title. He also acknowledged the fact that Hill has worked to build his football career.
Lyles won gold in the 100m at the Paris Olympics. He clocked a personal best time of 9.79s ahead of Kishane Thompson and Fred Kerley who finished second and third with times of 9.79s and 9.81s, respectively.
Hill had earlier posted that he would like to face Lyles in a 50m dash.
"Sign the contract and lock in that 50 yard race," Hill posted on X.
Tyreek Hill claims he could beat Noah Lyles in a race
Following his ‘world champions’ remarks at last year’s World Championships in Budapest, Noah Lyles came under fire from several US athletes, including NFL wide receiver Tyreek Hill.
Lyles explained why NBA players should not refer to themselves as world champions after winning major titles.
"You know the thing that hurts me the most is that I have to watch the NBA Finals and they have 'world champion' on their head. World champion of what? The United States? Don't get me wrong, I love the U.S., at times, but that ain't the world," Lyles said at the time.
In a recent interview, Hill slammed Lyles, claiming that he would beat the 27-year-old and made fun of his COVID-19 diagnosis. He advised Lyles to stick to what he knows best, track and field.
"For him to do to that and say that we're not world champions of our sports....like come on bro, speak on what you know about, you know what I'm saying, and that's track. I would beat Noah Lyles. I'm not going to beat him by a lot, but I would beat Noah Lyles. When I beat him, I’m going to put on a COVID mask and let him know I mean business," Hill said.
At the Paris Olympics, Noah Lyles lost the 200m title to Letsile Tebogo with Kenny Bednarek coming second in the race. He claimed after the race that he had tested positive for Covid-19, and thus missed the men’s 4x100m relay race, where Team USA was disqualified for breaching the baton exchange rules.
