IOA submits Letter of Intent to host 2036 Olympics in India: Reports

SC Desk

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has reportedly made an ambitious move to host the 2036 Olympics by submitting a 'Letter of Intent' to the International Olympic Committee (IOC), marking the first official step toward hosting the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

This letter, submitted on October 1, represents India’s strong commitment to bringing the prestigious event to the country, showcasing India's growing aspirations on the global sports stage.

According to a source from the sports ministry (as reported by PTI), this move is seen as a monumental opportunity for India, with anticipated benefits ranging from economic development and social progress to increased youth engagement and empowerment.

"This monumental opportunity could bring substantial benefits, fostering economic growth, social progress, and youth empowerment across the country," the source was quoted as saying by PTI.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had previously expressed the government’s aspirations to host the Olympics, highlighting the significance of this event as a catalyst for development and national pride.

With this official submission, India now enters a competitive field of prospective host nations, including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Turkey, who have all shown serious interest in hosting the Games. The final decision on the 2036 host city, however, will only come after the IOC elections next year.

India’s bid to host the Olympics has received support from IOC president Thomas Bach, adding a degree of optimism to their chances. The city of Ahmedabad is currently being considered as the frontrunner for the potential hosting duties. This city, known for its infrastructural growth, is expected to lead India’s efforts if the bid is successful, making it a likely center of global attention during the Games.

The last time India hosted a major international multi-sport event was during the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, marking a long-awaited return to the global sports hosting stage.

At the recent Paris Olympics, IOA president PT Usha and other top sports administrators actively lobbied for India’s bid, aiming to strengthen India’s case with international stakeholders.

Moreover, the Sports Authority of India’s (SAI) Mission Olympic Cell has prepared a comprehensive report that identifies key measures required for a successful bid. This report has been presented to Mansukh Mandaviya, India’s new sports minister, highlighting India’s well-planned approach for the bid.

Indigenous sports and new disciplines proposed for 2036 Olympics

As part of India’s vision for the 2036 Games, the IOA is pushing for the inclusion of traditional and popular Indian sports, including yoga, kho kho, kabaddi, and chess, along with T20 cricket and squash. These sports resonate with India’s cultural identity and are expected to add a unique flavor to the Olympics if India’s bid is successful.

While the pursuit of the Olympics is a monumental step forward, the IOA is currently dealing with internal challenges. IOA president PT Usha and the association’s Executive Council are at odds.

India’s determination to host the Olympics presents both a significant opportunity and a formidable challenge. As the nation strives for Olympic hosting rights, it must navigate these internal dynamics and prepare for strong international competition. Nonetheless, with solid planning and a clear vision, India remains poised to make its mark on the Olympic stage.
