Jordan Chiles finds support from US Olympic & Paralympic Committee after CAS controversy; appeal in motion after "critical errors" in processes
The United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC) has stated that they will appeal the Court of Arbitration for Sport's (CAS) ruling on Jordan Chiles' bronze medal at the Paris Olympics 2024.
In the individual floor exercise final at the 2024 Paris Olympics, Chiles' score placed her fifth, before an inquiry submitted to the judges saw her score increase by 0.1 points to 13.766. This moved her up to third, giving the American gymnast the bronze, her first individual Olympic medal.
However, CAS has recently ruled that her appeal was submitted past the one-minute deadline. They stated that her original score of 13.666 should stand, which means she is back to a fifth-place finish, with the Olympic medal taken off her.
In a statement, USOPC said that they would be appealing the CAS verdict. They cited "critical errors" in the processes involved, leading to the Committee being "not properly represented or afforded the opportunity to present [their] case" :
"The U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC) will be appealing the recent decision made by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) regarding Jordan Chiles. We firmly believe that Jordan rightfully earned the bronze medal, and there were critical errors in both the initial scoring by the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) and the subsequent CAS appeal process that need to be addressed. The initial error occurred in the scoring by FIG, and the second error was during the CAS appeal process, where the USOPC was not given adequate time or notice to effectively challenge the decision," they said.
"As a result, we were not properly represented or afforded the opportunity to present our case comprehensively. Given these circumstances, we are committed to pursuing an appeal to ensure that Jordan Chiles receives the recognition she deserves. We remain dedicated to supporting her as an Olympic champion and will continue to work diligently to resolve this matter swiftly and fairly," they added.
Jordan Chiles takes social media break "for mental health" following CAS verdict
Besides the disappointment of having the Olympic medal taken from her, Jordan Chiles has also had to deal with a barrage of social media abuse. Fans have posted messages about her since she won the bronze and the CAS ruling has resulted in more messages being posted online.
Chiles took to social media and posted four heartbreak emojis in reaction to the CAS decision. She later stated that she was going to take a break from social media:
"I am taking this time and removing myself from social media for my mental health thank you" she said on her Instagram stories.
The CAS verdict now sees Romanian Ana Barbosu occupy the final step on the podium once again, while her compatriot Sabrina Maneca-Voinea moves up to the fourth position.
