Kishane Thompson pulls out of the Rome Diamond League, delaying his return to the track after Paris Olympics silver medal
Kishane Thompson will not compete in the Rome Diamond League, a tournament where he was previously registered to compete. The Jamaican's wait to compete in an event after the Paris Olympics continues
Recently, a list of the athletes competing at the men's 100m in the Rome Diamond League was released on the tournament's website. The likes of Letsile Tebogo, Fred Kerley and Christian Coleman will be a part of this event, which will be held on the night of 30th August. Even Christian Coleman, who had failed to qualify for the Paris Olympics, would be participating at this event.
However, there is no mention of Kishane Thompson, who recently won the silver medal at the 100m event in the Paris Olympics 2024.
The 23-year-old Jamaican sprinter had even pulled out from the recently concluded Silesia Diamond League due to a hamstring injury that has been troubling him ever since he incurred it during the 100m semifinals at the Paris Olympics.
Kishane Thompson's performance at the Paris Olympics
With a personal best of 9.77 seconds, which he had run at the Jamaican Olympic trials for the Paris Olympics, Kishane Thompson looked forward to restoring the Jamaican supremacy over the 100m, interrupted at the Tokyo Olympics by Lamont Marcelle Jacobs of Italy, who had become the first European sprinter since Linford Christie of Great Britain to win the Olympic gold medal in the men's 100m event.
Thompson faced competition from the likes of Noah Lyles, Fred Kerley of USA, who was the silver medalist at the previous edition, Andre de Grasse of Canada, as well as Ferdinand Omanyala of Kenya.
Thompson topped his heat to qualify for the semifinals, with a reasonable timing of 10 seconds. He topped his heats in the semifinals, as well as the overall list, with a timing of 9.80 seconds.
In the final, Kishane Thompson surged ahead, and he was all set to win the Olympic gold medal. However, a late surge from Noah Lyles took the case towards the photo finish. It turned out that Lyles had edged out the jamaican for the gold medal by 0.005 seconds for the Olympic gold medal, despite both clocking 9.79 seconds.
Kishane Thompson later participated in the men's 4x100m relay. However, the team finished fourth in the heats, and could not qualify for the final. For the first time since the Athens Olympics in 2004, the Jamaican relay team had failed to qualify for the final of men's 4x100m relay event.
