Noah Lyles: "Tennis players are World Champions that play against the top in the world constantly"
Noah Lyles made headlines during the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary, after his controversial comments about NBA players. Following his third consecutive world title in the 200m, the American expressed his frustration in a press conference, saying:
"You know what hurts me the most is that I have to watch the NBA Finals and they have ‘world champion’ on their head."
"World champion of what? The United States? Don’t get me wrong. I love the U.S. — at times — but that ain’t the world. That is not the world. We are the world," he added.
Lyles revisited the topic during his recent visit to the US Open. When asked to share his thoughts on the tournament winners and whether he considered them "world champions," the 2024 Paris Olympics gold medalist replied:
"These [tennis players] are World Champions. International players that play against the top in the world constantly, these are world champions."
